This video is a tour of Versace’s rise to prominence and enduring legacy.
When Gianni Versace launched his company in 1978, the world took notice and the celebrities came calling.
One of the first major luxury labels to realise the value of the supermodel and to put fashion on an international media platform, Versace will always be considered fashion royalty.
The provocateur designer combined luxurious classicism with overt sexuality, attracting as much criticism as praise. He is quoted as saying: “I don’t believe in good taste”, while brazenly defying the more restrained fashion rules of the time.
Following his shocking assassination in 1997, it fell to his sister Donatella Versace to pick up the mantle, which she did to great success, and continues to power the luxury brand as its creative director today.
