Following coronavirus clusters in two Limassol schools, authorities have seen a surge in infections at a regional primary school in Eptagonia, a village close to the district border with Larnaca.

Two primary schools at Polemidia, Ayios Georgios and Ayios Nicolaos, have reported around 70 cases so far – pupils and teachers — while the regional Lamatiki primary in Eptagonia has seen a spike in infections.

The chairman of the school boards coordinating committee suggested the number could be higher.

Dinos Ellinas said they were still waiting for the results of the contact tracing and the tests. Of the regional school, Ellinas said they did not have specific numbers yet.

“The problem is that primary schools mainly, are asymptomatic,” he said, suggesting that the infections were due to afternoon extracurricular activities.

Ellinas said during the previous wave, it showed that it was the extracurricular activities and contacts that started the problem in the schools.

The surge in Limassol comes as the government announced some easing of restrictions on Thursday that could aggravate the situation further.
