German artist Otto Dix fought in and survived some of the worst battles of the First World War.
He was one of the only visual artists of the early 20th century to reveal the trauma of war in their work, transforming his battlefield experiences into raw and powerful art.
In this video, we examine prints of these frontline depictions primarily from Dix’s ‘Der Krieg’ portfolio, as well as images of life on the streets of Germany, which he painted as a returning civilian.
