In this video from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ‘The Artist Project’ series, Iranian artist Y.Z. Kami reflects on the arresting power of ancient Egyptian Fayum portraits.

‘The Artist Project’ features artists responding to works from the Met’s vast collection of notable works.

Fayum mummy portraits are a type of naturalistic painted portrait on wooden boards attached to upper class mummies from Roman Egypt. They belong to the tradition of panel painting, one of the most highly regarded forms of art in the Classical world.

Born in 1956, Kami is a New York-based Iranian artist, who is chiefly known as a painter, although his work also incorporates photography, installation and sculpture.
