Over ninety per cent of those hospitalised for Covid-19 are unvaccinated, the health ministry said on Wednesday as it again urged the public, particularly younger people where vaccine take-up is low, to get vaccinated.

It further stated that the Delta variant is detected mainly in unvaccinated people, and it must be assumed it is spreading in the community.

The ministry said that 70 per cent of those who tested positive are below the age of 40 and only four per cent of them are fully vaccinated – while 16 per cent have received their first dose. The remaining 80 per cent have no history of vaccination against Covid.

It also warned that “in recent days there has been in increase in younger people being hospitalised”, linking the trend to the Delta variant (which was first identified in India).

According to the health ministry the Delta variant is six times more transmissible than the British variant [Alpha variant, first detected in the UK].

Attention has intensified in recent weeks over the Delta variant which has been blamed on a four-month peak of deaths in under-vaccinated Russia (548 deaths reported on Wednesday) and a rise in positive cases in vaccine paragon Israel.

Daily cases in Israel more than doubled to 125 on Monday after outbreaks at two schools were attributed to the more infectious Delta variant.

About 55 per cent of Israel’s 9.3 million population have received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

The health ministry’s announcement follows Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou’s similar concerns which were expressed on Tuesday.

“The public is urged to be particularly careful as regards adherence to persona hygiene measures and health protocols in force at workplaces and various social activities,” the ministry said.

Moreover, those who have not yet been vaccinated, particularly younger people, are urged to book their vaccination appointment the soonest possible in order to reduce the possibility of infection or transmission of the virus in their personal or professional environment, thus averting an upsurge in the virus, it concluded.
