The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) on Thursday held its first physical event since the coronavirus outbreak began.

The event took place at the Siakolio Educational Centre in Nicosia and allowed the CCS to present awards to the winners of Bebras, an international student competition on computational thinking, as well as to the winners of the Cyprus informatics olympiad.

The event was also attended by Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou, who praised the CCS for holding the event, as well as chief education officer Kyprianos Louis.

Prodromou said the ministry places a lot of importance on informatics, including its designation as its own unique subject across all levels of the education system.

CCS vice president Andreas Loutsios thanked the ministry for its cooperation, along with the Association of IT Teachers (Sykap) for their role as co-organisers, as well as XM and Oracle Academy for sponsoring the event.

The ceremony started with the awarding of 11 students who represented Cyprus in international IT olympiads and programming competitions in 2021.

“Thanks to the excellent performance of these students in 2021, Cyprus won two bronze medals at the World IT Olympiad, a silver at the Europe Youth Olympics, one gold, one silver and one commendation at the Balkan Gymnasium Olympiad, three bronze medals at the Balkaniada, and as many medals at the Lotfi Zadeh, Infocup and Innopolis Open international competitions,” CCS said.
