Reunification still the goal says president as Cyprus remembers invasion (Updated)

Liberation from third-party dependencies and reunification are still the goals said President Nicos Anastasiades on Wednesday as Cyprus marked 48 years since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

After laying wreaths at the monument, political parties issued statements condemning the invasion and demanding the resumption of negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus issue.

Both ruling Disy and main opposition party Akel called for negotiations to pick up from where they stopped at Crans Montana in 2017.

“We are not in a position to relay positive news today, as the Cyprus issue is at the worst it has ever been,” Akel’s statement read.

“Turkey is exploiting and weaponising the prolonged impasse to create new faits accomplis and in this way consolidate partition,” it read.

President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou in a Twitter post also commemorated the day referring to the constant struggle for the island’s reunification based on UN decisions and international law principles.
