A small quantity of cannabis was found in a plastic bag with clothes brought in the Ayia Napa police station for a detainee, Famagusta police said on Monday.

According to Famagusta police spokesman Steve Theodoulou, a 48-year-old man who was detained in the Ayia Napa police station had asked his friend to bring him some personal items.

During checks of the plastic bag with clothes brought in by a 76-year-old man, officers found a wooden box that contained 0.1667 grammes of cannabis. The older man denied any involvement, saying he did not know the bag contained illegal substances.

The detainee, arrested on charges of domestic violence, admitted he had asked the man to bring him the bag without informing him of its content.

He was charged for the offence, while the 76-year-old was released without charge.
