Music nights to look forward to

charis ioannou

Late January and early February have a couple of live music evenings to look forward to before next month’s themed events begin. I’m talking about Valentine’s Day. Until then, it is simply good live music from the island’s professionals.

On Friday, Sarah’s Jazz Club turns the spotlight on Charis Ioannou, one of Cyprus’ internationally-known jazz saxophonists. A band leader and player of the alto, baritone and tenor saxophones, Ioannou has performed throughout Europe and North America with notable artists and this Friday he will be joined by two Cypriot artists. Accompanying Ioannou on the jazz club’s stage will be Michael Messios on double bass and Marios Spyrou on drums.

One more live performance from local musicians is planned for this weekend at Sarah’s. The Ioanna Troullidou quartet will perform a special jazzy set on Saturday. Singer Troullidou, joined by Marios Toumbas, Irenaeos Koullouras and Stelios Xydias, will perform songs from the jazz standards repertoire as well as some original songs.

Then, as February arrives, another local band will take the stage of a Nicosia bar. Murphy’s Brother In-Law is a Nicosia-based band that has been on the scene since 2016, presenting a unique blend of blues and classic rock. On February 2 they will be doing a special live gig at New Division where they will premiere a few of their original songs.
