Scammers posing as online bank clerks are contacting people on WhatsApp suggesting they withdraw money from their accounts, police said on Tuesday.

Police said they had received complaints regarding the new scam and called on the public to be careful.

According to the police, the scammers, for “security reasons”, ask people to show their identity and bank cards during a video call.

Once this information is given, the scammers withdraw the available funds from the victims’ bank accounts.

They also ask the victims to confirm the transaction through their banking applications.

Police call on the public not to respond to the calls, not follow the instructions given and not reveal sensitive information, such as access codes, OTP (one time passwords) codes, PIN numbers, or ID account and bank card details.

Anyone receiving such a call should ask those calling them to verify their identity by contacting them through the official customer service channels.

If any information is disclosed, the public should immediately contact their banks.
