Two 17-year-olds from Syria were sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday for setting fire to a hotel operating as a shelter for unaccompanied underaged migrants in Oroklini, Larnaca.
The teens were facing three charges – two concerning arson and one for conspiracy to commit a crime.
A third underaged person, who had also been charged, was acquitted.
The Larnaca district court heard, behind closed doors, that the crimes were committed on June 5 at the shelter housing about 80 underaged migrants.
A fire had broken out on June 4 and had been extinguished by the fire department. In the early hours of June 5, a second fire broke out, causing extensive damage to the second floor of the hotel and common use areas on the third floor.
No one was hurt in the blaze.
After the two fires, the underaged migrants were taken to other shelters in Larnaca.
