Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis has officially announced the candidacy of the Republic of Cyprus for re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The Shipping Deputy Ministry officially announced its candidacy for the 2026-2027 term during an event held on Wednesday evening at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) headquarters in London.
It should be noted that Cyprus has been a member of the organisation since 1973, and has been elected to the IMO council since 1987.
In an announcement released on Thursday, the ministry said that through its participation, Cyprus has “contributed significantly to the decisions of the organisation”.
In her speech at the event, the Hadjimanolis presented Cyprus’ candidacy for re-election to the council in category C.
Category C of the IMO council consists of 20 states that have special interests in maritime transport or navigation.

Moreover, these states are elected to ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world on the council.
Membership in the aforementioned category offers several potential benefits. These include the ability to influence global maritime policy and gain access to valuable information and expertise.
Additionally, it provides opportunities to network with other maritime nations and industry representatives, while also enhancing a country’s international standing.
The Cypriot shipping minister also referred to Cyprus’ work in the organisation and the goals of Cyprus shipping at a global level.
Finally, ministry noted that the event was also attended by the secretary-general of the IMO, ambassadors and other diplomats.
