I would like to praise garbage man George Rotos for the job he is doing (‘People are queueing up to do this job’ Cyprus Mail, December 21 by Theo Panayides) and would like to point out to George that if someone knows you and sees you at work and he avoids talking to you, it’s his loss and he is not someone you should worry about.
People should have full appreciation and respect for the job you and your colleagues are doing as it’s not an easy job. As you said it’s dirty, it’s smelly but by you standing up to the dirt and the smell, all the other people are not having to endure this situation because you are taking care of moving the rubbish from outside their houses and their businesses.
I want these people who do not respect people like George and the job they are doing to imagine just for a week their garbage is not collected. The smell will be in their houses and on their streets. Besides the smell there are the diseases, insects and the look of the streets. Think of the impression people will have like tourists or business people.
So just to tell you George I have full respect and admiration for the job you are doing by keeping our houses and streets clean and everyone should be proud and in debt to you and your colleagues. Whoever does not share this feeling of respect and appreciation should be ashamed of himself and you should not be bothered by such category of snobby people .
I am sure a lot of people feel the same and share the same thoughts as me. In Japan there is a statue for garbageman in appreciation and respect for the job they do and I think every country should have the same.
