The Cypriot government has reiterated its demand for fairness and objectivity in the reports of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regarding the Cyprus issue. Speaking after the Epiphany celebrations in Paphos, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasised the importance of accurate representation of the situation.
“We expect these reports to reflect the real facts with the objectivity and impartiality they should embody,” Letymbiotis said. He stressed that “Cyprus remains in a defensive stance and cannot be equated with Turkey’s actions as an occupying power”.
Letymbiotis added, “It is positive that the importance of the peacekeeping force’s presence in our country is acknowledged by the UN. We have demonstrated our respect for its mandate as defined by UN resolutions.”
Letymbiotis also mentioned the upcoming visit of UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, who is expected to prepare for a multilateral conference on Cyprus. “This visit stems from the decision made during the October 15 dinner with the UN Secretary-General and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar,” Letymbiotis noted.
The latest UN report notes military violations by both sides, including the installation of unauthorised surveillance systems in the buffer zone and frequent police interventions. The report also acknowledges an informal meeting organised in October 2024 to encourage the leaders of both sides to discuss opening new crossing points.
It further highlights the plight of 142 asylum seekers, including 35 children, stranded in the buffer zone due to “pushbacks by the Republic of Cyprus.” The asylum seekers received urgent humanitarian aid in coordination with the UNHCR before being transferred to reception centres by November.
Letymbiotis confirmed that President Christodoulides will attend the funeral of former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis next Thursday. “Simitis, alongside the late Glafcos Clerides, played a pivotal role in Cyprus’ accession to the European Union – the greatest diplomatic achievement of our country,” he stated.
