A round of artistic, critical discussions on colonial heritage and environmental stewardship through contemporary art is coming up in Larnaca. The event series is an initiative by the cultural organisation D6:EU and Larnaka 2030 and there will be both in-person and online meetings, open to all.

Happening first is the event Reimagining Colonial Heritage: Environmental Impact and Cultural Response on Friday, January 24. The event is part of Contested Desires: Constructive Dialogues, an international cultural conversation between artists, communities and the museums and archives that shape our colonial narratives.

On Friday, those interested – artists, locals, researchers, historians and the wider public – can join the free conference held at Cathedral Saint Lazarus – Schooling Venue in Larnaca from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The event will explore how artists are responding to the climate crisis, give an opportunity to hear from artists and find out about arts-led approaches to environmental stewardship.

Artists Sümer Erek and Andreas Mallouris from Cyprus, Rocío Paz Guerrero Marín from Chile and Amaia Molinet from Spain will talk about their practice followed by a panel discussion exploring the ways art is addressing the impact of colonialism on the environment. International audiences and interested parties from all over Cyprus can join the event online by registering online on Eventbrite.

Several events will be held this week, from Thursday to Sunday, as the programme welcomes international artists, producers, cultural institutions and museums to Cyprus to take part in workshops and discussions to address urgent global challenges on decolonisation.

In addition, online presentations that set the scene will be held on Thursday covering two topics. At 12pm Argyro Toumazou and Loizos Kapsalis will deliver The Colonial History of Cyprus presentation with insights on artistic negotiation of identity in colonial eras by Antonis Danos.

Then, at 3.30pm, the From Colonialism to the Climate Crisis discussion will be held online with keynote addresses by Nicholas Anastasopoulos, Christos Carras and the Cyprus Energy Agency, facilitated by Clymene Christoforou of D6:EU.
