The Gender Equality Committee (GEC) says it plans to meet with the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) after sexual harassment allegations by a female football player were made public earlier this month.
Stating that it appears that this is not an isolated incident, the committee said increased measures had to be taken to protect female athletes in male-dominated environments such as football.
In Cyprus, the CFA serves as the governing body of football overseeing the organisation of championships, playing a pivotal role in the professionalisation of sport on the island.
In a call with the Cyprus Mail in the previous week, Spyros Neofytides, executive president of the Pancyprian Footballers Association (PASP) that serves as the national footballers’ union criticised the CFA for not providing a framework for handling sexual harassment cases until now.
He noted that Fifa had a code of ethics which the CFA did not yet adopt and further called on those responsible to take safeguarding in sports more seriously.
