In the nearly-always-sunny Ayia Napa, there is something to do all year round. In an effort to engage long-term visitors and provide cultural experiences beyond the popular summer months, Ayia Napa municipality has launched a series of winter activities. A hands-on, experiential programme has begun to introduce visitors to the traditions, customs and folk culture of the area.
Running from January to March, a series of cultural and educational events will show visitors the crafts of the district, its people and customs. On Friday a pumpkin cultivation seminar by Chrystalla Pitsilli will take place at the Farmhouse (Agrospito) followed by a painting session. All sessions begin at 10am and last for about two hours.
Next is halloumi and trachanas preparation and tasting with Loukia Savva on February 7, a chair weaving demonstration by the Apostolos Pavlos Special School on Valentine’s Day and a spoon sweets workshop with Maria Nikola on February 21.
On the programme are also traditional cup-making (February 28), basket weaving (March 14), pottery demonstration (March 21) and Cypriot traditional dishes preparation and tasting by local housewives (March 28).
And that is not all. Two excursions are also planned for January 31 visiting CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth and the Antelia Thematic Bee Park in Achna on March 7.
