Oroklini deputy mayor, Neophytos Fakontis, stated that important development projects exceeding €12 million are set to transform the heart of Oroklini. Among the initiatives are an outdoor amphitheatre and an innovative sports centre.
Fakontis explained that following Oroklini’s merger with Larnaca Municipality under local government reform, efforts have been accelerated to secure EU funding for key infrastructure upgrades.
“The projects include the redevelopment of the old neighbourhood, a 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre at the village’s core, and a multipurpose sports centre catering to community needs,” he said, adding that the total cost is expected to exceed €12 million.
The third phase of the Larnaca-Dhekelia road upgrade, which has been ongoing for approximately 18 months, is nearing completion.
“This section, stretching from the Oroklini police station to beyond the Lebay Hotel, features four traffic lanes, service roads, roundabouts, pedestrian pathways, cycling lanes, parking spaces, and green areas,” Fakontis noted.
Scheduled for a March handover, the project’s cost, including VAT, is over €20 million.
The construction of wave breakers has progressed in Oroklini’s coastal region. The final, seventh structure is due for completion by early March.
“This €4 million project safeguards the shoreline, creating new beaches while mitigating erosion risks,” Fakontis explained.
A similar initiative in Pervolia, part of the same transport ministry programme, has seen higher costs due to more severe erosion issues in that area. The final phase of Oroklini’s seafront walkway is advancing.
“Planning permission is nearly complete, with tenders to be announced soon,” Fakontis stated. The walkway’s cost is estimated at €4 million.
Meanwhile, efforts to enhance green spaces saw 1,000 trees planted in 2024, 730 of which were along the coast. Further plans include planting 2,000 additional trees in March, supported by the Larnaca tourism development and promotion company.
