Feeling swamped by new releases? We sort the wheat from the chaff

February is just around the corner and as always we are here to help you wade through the avalanche of content coming from Netflix – seriously guys, you can take a breather, we’ll live if you don’t drop something for just one day – and get to the good stuff!

We have political thrillers, rom-coms, reality shows and a bunch of new series coming this month. Here are our suggestions:

Celebrity Bear Hunt (February 5)

When I first learned about this show I was seriously concerned that someone, somewhere, took the ‘Would you rather be left in the woods alone with a bear or a man’ meme seriously and dropped a bunch of celebrities with a bear.

Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Turns out, the show’s premise is that famous survival expert and urine connoisseur Bear Grylls hunts down celebrities in the Costa Rican jungle in a show fronted by British TV presenter Holly Willoughby. The show is supposed to be gruelling, putting players through mental and physical exhaustion, all while Grylls lurks in the jungle ready to pounce, capture and eliminate players. Producers promised an action-filled show, full of danger. Actually, one of the players almost died during filming and had to be resuscitated by Grylls. If reality TV is your thing, you are in for a treat as this one looks amazing.

Still, the bear one would be better.

Apple Cider Vinegar (February 6)

Health gurus and health influencers are nothing new but when social media really exploded, health advice and coaching really took off. With Instagram still in its infancy and AI being a distant dream, people tended to actually believe what they saw online. This is how Belle Gibson managed to build a wellness empire claiming to have treated multiple malignant tumors by simply exercising, proper natural diet and alternative medicine.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a six-part series based on real-life events. It tells the story of how Belle fooled her massive audience with her fake treatments and how she scammed them out of money.

Thank God this couldn’t happen now, not with all those fact-checkers firmly in place and not threatened by tech billionaires kowtowing to a South African nazi-saluting billionaire. Dodged that bullet.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 (February 13)

After the shocking resolution of the second part of the final season, our heroes are left to do some soul-searching and the Sekai Tekai tournament is still up for grabs. As I don’t want to spoil anything I can’t get into specifics, just know that if you weren’t watching this series before, now is your chance to catch up before the final part drops!

What I can tell you is that somehow the series is tied to the Karate Kid: Legends movie that comes out in May, where Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan team up to train a young boy in both kung fu and karate. How does the series connect with the movie? Where will the franchise go from there? Everything will be answered in a few days!

Zero Day (February 20)

Robert De Niro stars as George Mullen, a beloved former US president, who is called back into action to lead a committee to investigate a catastrophic cyberattack on US soil that left thousands dead. Zero Day is a political thriller, a limited series that is De Niro’s first time starring in a TV show. It will look into issues of disinformation and conspiracy and how leadership corrupts even the best of us.

This is my most anticipated series for this month and I cannot wait!

Running Point (February 27)

Who doesn’t love a sports comedy? Kate Hudson hits the screen as Isla Gordon, part of a powerful LA family known for owning the local basketball team, the LA Waves.

Isla, the only girl in a family of highly competitive brothers, is pushed into the spotlight when she is forced to take over the reins of the team following a scandal. Overlooked, underappreciated and often ignored, Isla now gets her chance to shine and lead the team back to victory.

I’m pretty wary of feel-good sports comedies, especially after Ted Lasso but this one looks promising and I can get back some of that Lasso magic, I’m in!
