For pop culture lovers, May signals the comeback of a long-standing tradition – the Eurovision Song Contest. On May 17 when the Grand Final is on and every local news channel will be broadcasting live from Switzerland, a fiesta will be held in Nicosia as well, hosted by the Embassy of Switzerland and ACCEPT LGBTI Cyprus.
The Eurovision finale coincides with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and so ACCEPT and the embassy are making the most of the two events by organising a colourful party on the evening of May 17 in Eleftheria Square.
As the event is also supported by Nicosia municipality and Diplomats for Equality Cyprus, the party will begin with short welcome addresses by the Nicosia mayor and the Swiss ambassador at 9.30pm. The live broadcast will commence as the whole of Europe tunes in at 10pm.
Best of all, the event is completely free of charge for people to enjoy a night of pop music and performances and if singing along works up an appetite, the Mediterranean Bar Show will also be happening nearby offering a variety of street food and drinks to keep the party going.
“Whether you’re a Eurovision superfan, an advocate for equality, or simply looking for a joyful evening out,” comment organisers, “this is the place to be.”
