A 20-year-old Turkish national was arrested by the Republic of Cyprus’ police and handed over to the United Nations at the Ledra Palace, the Republic’s police confirmed on Thursday.
A police spokesperson confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that the man had been arrested on suspicion of illegally entering Cyprus after it was found that he was a Turkish national and had not entered the island through either of the airports or any of the seaports operated by the Republic’s authorities.
The Turkish Cypriot police, meanwhile, said the man had been wanted after opening fire at a house in the Kyrenia district village of Karavas on May 23.
The shooting took place in broad daylight, with the Turkish Cypriot police saying at the time that while the walls of the house were damaged, no injuries or loss of life were recorded.
In addition, they said, the gun used in the incident was found discarded near the scene.
The man’s arrest comes amid a growing number of firearms-related incidents in the north, with four contracted hitmen having been arrested in the north in the space of the last nine months.
