Police are investigating an attempted murder in Larnaca after a 40-year-old man was reportedly attacked with a knife early Sunday morning.

A 33-year-old suspect has been arrested under a court warrant to assist with the ongoing investigation, police said.

According to police spokesperson Vyron Vyronos, the incident occurred around 7am in an apartment in the village of Tersefanou.

The suspect allegedly entered the apartment through an unlocked balcony door and attacked the 40-year-old resident.

“The suspect, a 33-year-old, is currently in custody at Larnaca CID,” Vyronos said.

The victim was initially taken to Larnaca general hospital but, due to the severity of his injuries, was transferred to Nicosia general hospital. He remains in critical condition.

Police said the case was reported around 7.15am by a 46-year-old Larnaca resident, who stated that she and the 40-year-old were in the apartment when the 33-year-old entered. The suspect reportedly went to the kitchen, grabbed a cleaver, and attacked the victim, inflicting multiple injuries.

The 33-year-old allegedly also attacked the 46-year-old woman, issuing threats to her life.

She managed to escape, fleeing to the building’s parking area, where she was found by police. By the time police arrived on the scene, the suspect had fled.

Police said the 40-year-old sustained severe injuries, including amputation of the left thumb, partial amputation of the right thumb and index finger, multiple lacerations to the hands and head, and a laceration to the back.

The 33-year-old suspect has been detained under a court order and is expected to appear before the Larnaca district court on Monday.
