The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet travels to Cyprus this spring to present a bold interpretation of George Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen. Yet this production goes beyond the classic narrative and addresses the struggle for women’s rights. Get ready for a fiery performance blending the worlds of ballet and flamenco.
With an outstanding cast, Carmen will hit Cyprus’ stages on May 21 to 23, with performances in Paphos, Nicosia and Limassol. Combining Bizet’s original music, Spanish guitar, jazz and passionate flamenco singing, the product gains fervour under David Gutiérrez’s creative direction. The director pays tribute to Prosper Mérimée’s work, and also reflects the cultural diversity of Barcelona, where many languages and communities co-exist.
An esteemed flamenco dancer, David is often described as the ‘Freddie Mercury of flamenco’ for his vibrant charisma and powerful energy on stage. Carmen brings gypsy stories in an unequal world in the strive for freedom and courage.
Expect flamenco song and dance, zapateado (the rhythm heel tap of flamenco), detailed costumes and a set design in a show that is set to win the hearts of both opera lovers and flamenco fans.
