Investment in sport is an investment in society and in the younger generation, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said on Friday, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening schools through targeted policies and measurable outcomes.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new gym at Lyceum Dimitrios Vikelas in Larnaca, Michaelidou said the project reflected a broader strategy to modernise education and respond to contemporary needs.
The minister pointed to ongoing education reforms in recent years, describing them as a structured effort involving new infrastructure, institutional changes and improvements reaching every school and student.
Within this framework, she said, sport plays a central role in shaping well-rounded individuals, fostering values such as discipline, resilience and self-confidence.
“With the inauguration of the ‘Dimitrios Vikelas’ gym, a shared vision becomes reality,” she said, adding that the facility would serve the needs of sports schools in Larnaca and support student activity in a safe and functional environment.
Michaelidou said the €50,000 project is the first in a series of similar developments planned for other districts, forming part of a broader policy to upgrade sports schools.

At the same time, Michaelidou stressed that sports schools must balance academic and athletic ambitions, taking into account students’ future plans.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting students, adding that the aim is to create schools that meet modern needs, with upgraded and fully equipped facilities for both students and teachers across Cyprus.
“Our goal is for schools to connect knowledge with the demands of our time, encouraging children to discover their talents and giving them the tools to develop them,” she said.
