President Nikos Christodoulides will attend Monday’s meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurma, with the necessary political will and a creative approach, with the aim of resuming direct negotiations within the agreed framework, deputy government spokesman Yiannis Antoniou said on Sunday.
“If the other side moves with the same approach, then well-founded expectations are created for the next step,” Antoniou added.
“The commitment of the secretary general of the United Nations, as expressed in the recent meeting with the President, encourages us to intensify efforts even more and to use every negotiating opportunity to end the unacceptable status quo,” he said.
The two leaders will meet at the residence of UN special representative in Cyprus Khassim Diagne on Monday afternoon.
The meeting between the two leaders is the first they have had since they held separate meetings with UNSG Antonio Guterres.
A government source told the Cyprus News Agency that Monday’s meeting will see Christodoulides and Erhurman exchange views on what they discussed with Guterres and how the United Nations sees the way to achieve progress on the Cyprus problem.
The last meeting between the two was held on February 24, which ended without a joint statement. Prior to that, they had also met on January 28.
