A naval cooperation exercise between Cyprus and Greece was carried out on Tuesday as part of the large-scale military drill Nikitis-Dimitra 2026, the defence ministry announced on Thursday.

The exercise, designated DNPN/02-2026, took place in the maritime area between Larnaca and Limassol and involved the National Guard offshore patrol vessel Ioannides and the Hellenic Navy frigate Elli.

According to the ministry, the training scenario included tactical manoeuvres, technical drills and communications exercises aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness at sea.

The ministry said the joint training was considered particularly beneficial, as it contributed to improving interoperability between the two forces and facilitated the exchange of expertise in the conduct of naval operations.

Chief of the National Guard lieutenant general Emmanuel Theodorou observed the exercise at sea and congratulated the crews of both vessels for their high level of training and professionalism.

The commander of the Elli also highlighted the significance of the exercise, describing it as another demonstration of the close ties between Cyprus and Greece.

“Following the completion of today’s joint training, I would like to express the great honour and pleasure we had in operating alongside our brothers in the Cypriot navy,” he said.

“The bonds between Greece and Cyprus are historic, unbreakable and have stood the test of time. At a time of evolving challenges, our joint presence at sea reaffirms our shared commitment to security, stability and the defence of our common values.

“Our cooperation today is yet another testament to our operational readiness and our fraternal relationship. We thank our Cypriot counterparts for the excellent cooperation and look forward to future joint activities.”

The exercise forms part of ongoing defence cooperation between Cyprus and Greece and reflects efforts to strengthen coordination and readiness in the Eastern Mediterranean.
