Outgoing transport minister Alexis Vafeades said he was leaving office “only with feelings of gratitude” on Thursday, rejecting suggestions he felt bitter over criticism surrounding the Takata airbag scandal as he formally handed the ministry to his successor Evie Tsolaki.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the transport ministry, Vafeades thanked President Nikos Christodoulides for the confidence shown in appointing him to what he described as a demanding portfolio, while expressing appreciation to ministerial staff for their support throughout his tenure.

Asked whether the Takata airbag affair had left him with any bitterness, Vafeades said “I leave only with feelings of gratitude.”

He added that the independent investigative committee had already “recorded where political responsibilities are attributed and where not”, referring to its findings on the handling of the defective airbags.

Reflecting on his time in office, he said the ministry’s “legacy” was the implementation of development projects such as the Larnaca port and marine and voiced confidence that they would continue under the new minister.

Tsolaki thanked her predecessor for the welcome she received, saying she had immediately felt part of the team.

“The displays of emotion I see in the ministry’s officials today reflects the deep sense trust, mutual respect and appreciation that developed under Alexis Vafeades,” she said.

She described assuming office as “a heavy burden”, saying expectations were high but pledging to continue projects already in progress.

“We are rolling up our sleeves starting today,” she said.

Asked about major road projects, Tsolaki referred to the recent meeting with Limassol local authorities over the proposed northern bypass, adding that improving the city’s road network remained essential.
