A fire broke out in a child’s bedroom at a house in Deryneia in the early hours of Sunday, causing extensive damage but no injuries.

The fire started at around 3.40am in a bedroom where a mobile phone was lying on the bed while connected to a charger, fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said.

The child noticed the fire and left the room before alerting the parents. The family was able to leave the house safely and no one was injured.

The bedroom sustained extensive damage from the fire and heat, while the rest of the upper floor was also affected.

Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The fire service said the fire was caused by the mobile phone and charger.
