There is a prospect for “concrete steps” towards progress on the Cyprus problem ahead of meetings in New York, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Wednesday, adding that the Greek Cypriot side has accepted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ seven-point proposal.

Speaking on CyBC radio, Letymbiotis said the government expected the Turkish Cypriot side to also adopt a constructive approach.

On crossing points, he recalled a Greek Cypriot proposal dating back to April 2015 concerning areas which have been recorded by the United Nations.

The government remains in contact with Guterres’ personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin, he said, expressing hope that the simultaneous presence of the two leaders in New York would provide an opportunity for further discussion and progress.

Preparations are already underway for President Nikos Christodoulides’ meetings in New York, including a meeting with Guterres.

Asked about applications for Cypriot citizenship by children of mixed marriages, Letymbiotis said they were being examined on the basis of established criteria and legislation.

He added that the government considers the issue a humanitarian matter rather than a confidence-building measure.

Letymbiotis also referred to the agreement between the Cyprus Football Association and Uefa, saying it was not being implemented by the Turkish Cypriot side.
