In this video, we take a look at how the indigenous Indian sport of Mallakhamb is crossing international waters, to take hold in the States.

Mallakhamb has been around since the 12th century, and sees gymnasts perform aerial yoga or gymnastic postures and wrestling grips, using a vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole, cane, or rope.

The name of the sport is derived from the terms ‘malla’, meaning wrestler, and ‘khamb’, which means a pole.

Earlier in March, the Indian Embassy in the US sent a request to India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, to provide them with Mallakhamb equipment, evidencing the growing popularity of the sport internationally.
