Every pet deserves a loving and respectful home: please only consider acquiring a pet if you will be able to take care of its long-term needs. Also, consider choosing your animal companion from a shelter, where there are so many wonderful furry friends who need a forever home.
In this video, veterinarian Dr. Lacey Rush of the Kelsey Canine Medical Center offers her guidance to families expecting a new baby, as to how best to introduce the newborn to their dogs.
She breaks down the steps into:
- Preparing a pooch ahead of the new arrival and getting them used to the likely changes in their environment
- Making the introduction effectively – such as letting dogs smell a swaddling blanket from the hospital with the infant’s scent on it, to familiarise them with the newborn
- Acclimating a dog once a baby has arrived – including never leaving the infant unsupervised with them
