An 81-year-old Russian woman was pronounced dead after lifeguards pulled her out of the water in a Larnaca beach on Friday.

Around 11:35am, other swimmers notified lifeguards after spotting the unconscious woman about 300 metres from the lifeguard tower.

They pulled her out of the water, and once on land, they administered first aid and used a defibrillator to try and revive her.

Due to the severity of the situation an ambulance transported her to Larnaca general hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy will be performed in the coming days.
