‘Let’s baptise everyone with glitter’ is the title of one of the works by local artist Mariandrie, a pink and blue canvas decorated with fabric glue, clear polish and, glitter. The piece is part of her new exhibition opening soon in Limassol, and her first solo showcase. The A Glitter Baptism exhibition will be held at The Edit Gallery from September 16 to October 15 featuring Mariandrie’s new body of work.

Mariandrie is a visual, interdisciplinary artist from Cyprus whose work revolves around a personal investigation of socio-political impacts on society. Her practice navigates between the realms of painting, installation art and textiles. Her main interest is to provoke new understandings in viewers and make them question their own biases and presumptions, to find what is genuinely their own and what is a fabrication of society and culture.

In her exhibition A Glitter Baptism, Mariandrie also aims to re-contextualise the perception of gender stereotypes. Using raw materials such as unprimed canvas, denim, rope and burlap fabric, as well as her particular use of colour, she manages to present bold statements with socio-political and religious messages, crafted in delicate techniques.

Reimagining and reconstructing painting through fibre, the artist produces a new contemporary form. Composition and scale are carefully considered, as the works approach both contemporary form and modern narrative. Her work leads viewers to re-examine the connection between concept and gender as well as to push the boundaries of what is considered feminine and masculine.

The title of the exhibition encompasses the rebirth of each individual into a more inclusive being as the artworks urge viewers to reconsider through glitter as catharsis. A metaphor for a changed perception toward a more inclusive community for all.
