’Tis the season of art exhibitions and one more opens on Tuesday in Limassol featuring some 22 artists. The Visual Acts exhibition at the Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki presents the work of important visual artists who worked as set and costume designers in theatres in Cyprus through photographs, drawings, posters, textiles, paintings, props, costumes, masks and 3D models.
“In a period when a graduate degree in set design was rare,” say the organisers, “the Cypriot theatre was flourishing, especially around the time of RIK Theatre’s and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation’s foundation. Therefore, visual artists worked with great frequency in Cyprus’ theatres. Through this juncture, they contributed a huge amount of work and created memorable sets and costumes. Along the way, new generations of visual artists worked in the theatre contributing to the reshaping of the landscape and the renewal of the means, materials and aesthetics that permeated their proposals. While producing this important work, these artists excelled in their personal work as well as participating in international exhibitions and events.”
Under the curation of the Centre’s creative director, Mariza Bargilly, the exhibition will remain open until December 3 and features the artists Tilemachos Kanthos, Stelios Votsis,Nicos Kouroussis, Glyn Hughes, Andreas Ladommatos, Andreas Charalambous, Hambis Tsaggaris, Theodoulos Gregoriou, Koula Savvides, Valentinos Josef, Stella Michaelidou, Maria Loizidou, Maria Papacharalambous, Andreas Paraskeva, Antonis Neofytou, Demetris Neocleous, Melita Couta, Paravan, Maria Lianou, Marianna Constanti, Alexis Vayianos and Elena Kotasvili.
