The start of 2023 brings a big star to the theatre screens. As the National Theatre Live programme continues at Rialto Theatre, the popular actress Emilia Clarke, who gained fame through her role in Game of Thrones, makes her West End debut in a 21st-century retelling of Anton Chekhov’s tale of love and loneliness. On January 7, Rialto Theatre brings a live recorded broadcast of the play The Seagull, directed by Jamie Lloyd.
Following his critically acclaimed five-star production of Cyrano de Bergerac, Jamie Lloyd brings Anya Reiss’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play to the stage. Filmed live in London’s West End, the play includes a cast featuring Tom Rhys Harries, Daniel Monks, Sophie Wu, and Indira Varma.
The Seagull is about a group of characters. A young woman is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wants to fight the changing times. In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts are broken. With nowhere left to turn, the only option is to turn on each other.
