Pensioner to stand trial for shooting intruder

The 82-year-old accused of attempted murder against a 67-year-old man will appear at the criminal court in Limassol for his trial on July 17.

The incident took place on June 11 around 7.15pm, when the 82-year-old man contacted the police by phone and reported that he had shot an intruder who had entered the yard of his home and was allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables.

The elderly suspect reported he had fired his shotgun in the air, however, he injured the man, who attempted to flee.

Police went to the scene where they located the injured 67-year-old man, who had been shot in the chest.

He was taken by ambulance to Limassol general hospital and then to a private clinic, where he underwent surgery and was kept for further treatment. His condition was described as critical.

On Thursday, the court will decide whether the 82-year-old will remain in custody until his trial on July 17.
