Strengthening the fire service is among the key priorities for the Christodoulides’ government, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis said on Tuesday.
Recognising the increasingly demanding role of firefighters amid growing challenges posed by climate change, urban development, and technological advancements, the government has pledged substantial investment in personnel, infrastructure and equipment to ensure an efficient and effective response to emergencies, he said.
Speaking on behalf of the President at the celebration of the Three Holy Youths, protectors of the Fire Service, he highlighted the symbolic connection between the courage of the saints and the dedication of firefighters.
He praised the bravery and sacrifice of those who risk their lives daily, drawing parallels between the unwavering faith of Ananias, Azarias and Misael in the face of fire and the fearless resolve of firefighters who confront life-threatening situations to safeguard others.
The Three Holy Youths were Hebrew children of royal lineage taken captive to Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar II. When they refused to worship his golden idol, the king ordered them thrown into a blazing furnace. Protected by an angel of the Lord, the fire turned to coolness around them, leaving them unharmed.
Amazed by the miracle, the king acknowledged the greatness of their God and spared their lives. Today, they are honoured as the patron saints of the Fire Service in Greece and Cyprus.
“Their story, well-known and celebrated, holds countless messages and symbols. As mortal humans, we must draw as much wisdom as possible from them,” Hartsiotis added.
“The victory of spirit over fear and danger must serve as an example, as a guide and beacon for the way we live our lives and for the values we must pass on to future generations.”
He said the modernisation and enhancement of the fire service, combined with ongoing personnel training, will improve response times, operational capabilities and, ultimately, citizens’ sense of security.
