A 56-year-old woman driving under the influence slightly injured an officer while attempting to evade arrest on New Year’s Day.
The incident occurred at around 7pm on Larnaca avenue in Nicosia when police, patrolling on a service motorcycle, signalled a car to stop for a check.
According to the information, the driver was not wearing her seatbelt.
The woman ignored the officer’s signal, accelerated and committed multiple traffic violations in an attempt to escape. Additional police units were called to assist in the pursuit.
The driver eventually stopped, however, she then reversed suddenly, injuring an officer on duty who was on the motorcycle. The collision between the car and the police motorcycle caused damage to both vehicles.
Police spokeswoman Kyriaki Lambrianidou told media that the driver tested positive for drugs and was arrested. However, the woman allegedly refused to provide a sample for a final drug test.
Lambrianidou said that the police man’s injuries are minor.
