Former volunteer commissioner Yiannakis Yiannaki appeared in Nicosia District Court on Wednesday with a new lawyer, having failed to find one since Yiannis Polychronis walked out on November 28 following a warning from the judge about contempt of court.

On Wednesday, judge Nicole Gregoriou dismissed a request filed on December 17 by Yiannaki calling her to recuse herself from his forgery case, claiming she was biased.

Yiannakis’ new lawyer, Thanasis Korfiotis, said he had intended to ask his client to withdraw the request for the judge’s recusal.

However, Gregoriou said the request had already been filed and thus she had to answer.

Gregoriou said the court found the request unjustified and lacking foundation and for this reason was dismissed.

Korfiotis requested time to prepare and the next hearing has been set for January 30 at 11am.
Yiannaki has claimed not guilty to eight charges of forged documents.
