Cyprus has reaffirmed its commitment to Francophonie, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said on Tuesday as a month of French speaking events kicks off.

The event holds special importance as Cyprus has recently become a full member of the international organisation of La Francophonie, Michaelidou said, which underscores the country’s dedication to the organisation’s core values: equality, solidarity, linguistic and cultural diversity, and dialogue among nations.

French, she said, is now a compulsory second foreign language in secondary education, while French language certifications were introduced in public schools in 2022.

The minister emphasised that these initiatives aim to enhance education quality, create new opportunities for students, and foster an inclusive school environment.

She described the French language as a gateway to the Francophone world, bringing culture to life in a dynamic and engaging way.

The 2025 Francophonie month celebrations include a wide range of events organised by the ministry in collaboration with the foreign ministry and the deputy ministry of culture, embassies and other institutions. Activities will feature national competitions for students, film screenings, concerts, literary events, cultural excursions and culinary workshops.
