President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday that he will exploit every opportunity at the Cyprus meeting in Geneva to create the conditions for the resumption of dialogue on the Cyprus issue.

The president, who delivered on Sunday morning a eulogy at the memorial service of Theophilos Georgiades, in Nicosia, said that “despite the stance of the other side, which limits our expectations, we will exploit every opportunity”.

“In a few hours I will be traveling to Geneva knowing very well what our goals and aspirations are, with the expectation that the informal expanded meeting will mark the continuation of the initiative to resume negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem,”  the president said.

The public rhetoric of the other side, he added, “as well as its stance so far, limit our expectations. Nevertheless, we will use every opportunity to create the conditions for the resumption of the dialogue that will lead to the liberation and reunification of our homeland. We owe it to all those who sacrificed themselves for this land, we owe it to our children, we owe it to our homeland.”

He said the aim is to reach a solution that will definitively end the current unacceptable state of affairs and allow our country to evolve into a modern united European state, which will offer all its legitimate residents the opportunity to live and thrive in conditions of security and prosperity.

The president stressed that 31 years after the assassination of Theophilos Georgiades, “we renew the promise that we will continue his struggle in a more intense manner to achieve the liberation and reunification of our homeland.

“A free country, without occupying armies, without guarantors and without interventionist rights. It is precisely on this legacy that our effort to resolve the Cyprus problem is founded,” he concluded.
