Accident report not taken seriouslyMy wife was involved in a car accident. Thankfully, neither she nor the other driver sustained any injuries. Our insurance agent arrived at the scene and completed the necessary report. He informed us that, given the nature of the incident – caused by dangerous driving – we had the option to report it to the police. We visited the Paphos police station and spoke with a traffic officer Pambos who showed absolutely no interest in assisting us or in filing a report.
Given the well-known issues with road safety in Cyprus and the high number of accidents, we were shocked by the lack of concern. One would expect the police to take such reports seriously – especially when someone makes the effort to report a dangerous driver.
The same driver involved in my wife’s accident had also nearly caused a collision with a neighbour. The man is an employee of a holiday company and regularly drives one of their visibly damaged pickup trucks recklessly along the steep Tala-Kamares road. These vehicles speed through the area daily, yet no action seems to be taken.
It seems that a fatal accident will need to occur before any real measures are taken. This is deeply troubling.
