We travel to Venice for a look at its muted nod to carnival this year, in lieu of the ordinarily lavish annual celebrations.

Cancelled in 2021 as part of Italy’s efforts to control the spread of Covid-19, the yearly pre-Lenten festival, culminating in costumes and parades, will be marked only by a handful of locals on February 16.

Yet, despite the absence of the usual festivities – not to mention, the hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists, who pack the fragile city of waterways during this period – many local residents are revelling in the fact that, for the first time in their memory… carnival in Venice is theirs to enjoy alone.
