In this video, we look at the art of guitar-making through the eyes of Maria Conde, member of the latest generation of a lineage of Spanish luthiers.
“I always try to put a little bit of my soul into the guitar,” muses Conde. “This is a mixture of sweetness – which I sometimes have, not always – and a little bit of bravery.”
A luthier is a craftsman who makes and repairs stringed instruments; a guitar luthier has studied and trained in the art of guitar repair and construction.
Conde guitars have been inspiring artists from Leonard Cohen to Bob Dylan. Today, they are made in a humble basement workshop in Madrid by the third generation of the artisan family.
