Stavrovouni monastery remains closed to visitors for the third week after coronavirus cases were detected among the monks.

The monastery’s abbot and two monks are at the Nicosia general hospital. Their health is good. Other monks with the virus are self-isolating in their cells with mild symptoms.

Bishop of Kition, Nektarios, told the Cyprus News Agency that it is believed the monks contracted the virus from visitors during the Holy Week.

One of the monks is a nurse and is caring for those self-isolating at the monastery, the bishop said.

From the moment a coronavirus case was detected at the monastery, the bishop said, the monks closed it to visitors to prevent the spread of the virus.

The first monks found positive have recovered, he said.
