Police said Friday they were investigating the death of one-month-old baby who died at Makarios children’s hospital.

Police said the boy had been transferred to Makarios from Limassol general hospital on Thursday night with high fever.

The baby was intubated but died at midday Friday.

The state health services organisation (Okypy) expressed sadness over the death, saying doctors did their best to save the baby.

In a statement later Friday, Okypy said the baby had been admitted with a fever on Wednesday to Limassol general hospital’s paediatric clinic where he received the necessary treatment.

After his condition worsened the next day, he was immediately transferred to Makarios hospital in Nicosia and was admitted to the ICU.

Doctors tried to stabilise his condition and performed surgery, Okypy said. The infant’s condition showed some improvement but after a few hours he presented serious hypotension, severe acidosis, and multi-organ failure.

“Despite the ICU’s doctors’ intense efforts, the infant’s clinical condition continued to deteriorate, and he succumbed at 11am,” Okypy said.

A postmortem is expected to be carried out on Saturday.
