Larnaca Municipality’s new multi-purpose social centre has been completed and will begin operations on January 10, the municipality said on Thursday.

Recently completed by the joint venture L&P and D.L.A. JOIN, the more than €4m project involved the expansion and upgrading of the existing community centre to create the new social centre that features outdoor and indoor recreation and fitness facilities.

This will serve various population groups and offer young people a venue to socialise. The new centre also has exhibition and events halls for the municipality’s various programmes and initiatives. It will also offer programmes operated by the municipality’s open school.

The indoor multi-purpose sports hall will be used for sport and events.

The centre also houses the services of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, the info centre of the Youth Organisation and the Larnaca district’s cultural creation foundation for children and young people. The municipality’s food bank is to be moved there at a later stage.

The project was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the 2014-2020 competitiveness and sustainable development programme. The total cost is estimated at approximately €4.2m plus VAT, the municipality said.
