The Larnaca Cinema Society have resumed their series of free film screenings this year and since January, Larnaca’s Theatro Skala has been hosting them. Running twice a month until May, plenty more independent cinema will be featured on the big screening, welcoming films of all genres and languages. Coming up next on Monday, April 4 is a film of French-Belgian production titled Titane.

The 2021 film is a body horror drama that stars Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut as Alexia, a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. She then embarks on a bizarre journey involving her fetish for cars.

Titane premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where its director Julia Ducournau became the second female director to win the Palme d’Or. The film received critical acclaim and was selected as the French entry in the 94th Academy Award but did not make the shortlist. It has since participated in several international film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, San Sebastián International Film Festival, New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival.

April’s next screening on April 18 is the Norwegian film Hope which follows the relationship between artist-partners Tomas and Anja as it is put to the test after Anja gets a life-threatening diagnosis. Three more films are included in the series next month before the screenings conclude at the end of May, wrapping up the Society’s pre-summer activities.
