The Limassol and Famagusta fire services responded to 16 weather-related incidents over the weekend, fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis reported on X on Monday.

Limassol fire stations responded to eight incidents, involving fallen trees, pumping water from properties, towing vehicles, and opening a rainwater drain from a flooded street. Famagusta fire stations also responded to eight incidents involving pumping water from basements, opening storm water drains, and vehicle towing.

Elsewhere across the island, a waterspout was spotted in Pissouri while mountain villages in Limassol and Paphos witnessed torrential water gushing down their streets. As with last week, Paphos and Limassol were once more the hardest hit.

Police warned drivers of landslides on the Platres-Troodos road and the Limassol-Paphos highway also became hazardous with police urging utmost caution when driving, particularly near Paramali, Sotira, Petra tou Romiou and Kouklia. Water and hail accumulated on the roads, creating dangerous conditions.

Police had also broadcast that the Avdimou-Pachna road was hazardous and slippery due to hail and slush. The Mandria – Pera Pedi road was closed due to flooding, as was the Gerasas – Agros road.

A 67-year-old man was seriously injured in Limassol after his vehicle overturned on Sunday morning in Parekklisia with authorities investigating the incident.

A yellow weather warning had been in place from Sunday 6pm until Monday 6am.

In total over the weekend the fire service responded to 50 incidents, of which 17 were fires. Among these was an incident involving a team of rock climbers who rescued an injured hunter from a ravine in ​​Delikipos.

The Larnaca fire department also responded with two fire engines to a fire in a commercial vehicle parked on a dead-end road in Oroklini. According to Kettis, the vehicle suffered extensive damage from the fire which also burned a small area of ​​dry grass. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities also reported dealing with a fire that the broke out in Geraki in Nicosia on Sunday and clearing of rock fall and other debris from roads.

According to the forestry department, a lightning strike caused the fire at 1.25pm and two fire trucks were sent to the scene.

By 2pm the flames had been doused and the only damage was a pine tree which was burnt to the ground.
