Free concerts at museums? Shakespeare in the mountains? Eurovision parties? Art fairs, markets and rose festivals? This weekend has it all

Larnaca district

Venture up to Vavla village this Saturday for another edition of its Musical Promenade. From 5pm onwards, 10 live music bands and ensembles will be dotted around the village performing live at traditional houses and village corners. The event features local musicians – all to be enjoyed by the public for free – a painting exhibition as well as food and a cocktail bar manned by Prozak to complete the evening.

In central Larnaca, antique cars will be on display at Finikoudes Avenue on Sunday as the Classic Car Festival takes place from 9am to 5pm. Music, car enthusiasts and vintage lovers will unite while also raising money for two local charities.

Nearby (and technically in the Famagusta district), the 8th Fairy Festival will happen at CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth in Avgorou. Fantasy games, dress up, lavender fields, workshops and fun for the whole family will charm guests for two whole days.

Limassol district

Coming for the first time this Saturday is the very exciting Shakespeare in the Mountains event, which will activate numerous locations in Platres. From pop-up promenade readings in Caledonia and Millomeris waterfalls with actors emerging from behind trees and leading audiences on a walk, to a bookshop selling Shakespeare-themed books in the square. Events will take place all day, concluding with a staged reading of Desdemona in English at 8pm with acclaimed Cypriot actress Agni Scott.

Another village will fill with visitors this weekend as Agros hosts its popular Rose Festival. Live radio links, music and dance performances, kiosks selling local produce and of course rose-related products made locally from Agros’ famous pink roses.

Also in its inaugural edition is the 1st Vima International Art Fair in Limassol which will unite local artists, galleries and art collectors with those of the world. Exhibitions, performances, installations, panel discussions, guided art tours and parties with DJs will take place between May 16 and 18 at The Warehouse by IT Quarter. The event is expected to be a landmark happening for Cyprus’ art scene, hoping to open new horizons.

For a social and active evening, check out the Sunday Intercultural Bike Ride starting from the NextBike station in the old Port at 8pm. The event is an opportunity to meet new people, move through cycling and explore Limassol on two wheels. The route will pass by the old port, Dasoudi and return to Molos Promenade. Beginner-friendly, it is free to attend, though registration is needed.

At ETHAL Theatre, and on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Amalgamation Choir, a 30-piece all-female a cappella ensemble, two performances will take place. Titled Clay, these will be unique concerts that combine traditional Cypriot music with contemporary elements. Through powerful a cappella arrangements, the choir celebrates the cultural heritage of Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean.  The second show at 9pm is sold out, but tickets are left for the 6pm show.

Nicosia district

Three mini performances by the Amalgamation Choir will also take place in Nicosia this Sunday on World Museum Day. The Cyprus Museum has invited the choir for a special evening that invites the public to explore the museum grounds while listening to the choir perform. Three show times have been set, each taking inspiration from different components of Clay. The 6pm performance is titled Earth, the 7pm performance is titled Water and the final one at 8pm is Air. Each one will last for 20 minutes and is free to attend without the need to pre-book.

Meanwhile, before the weekend even begins, the Laughter Festival at Skali Aglantzias will bring comedians and stand-up sets to Nicosia. From Thursday to Sunday, the best comedians of the island, as well as invited guests from abroad will perform live on stage. The majority of the shows will be in Greek, with the exception of an English Open Mic set on Friday and a stand-up show by Sri Lankan comedian Malinda on Sunday.

Two markets will be on in Nicosia. The Buy a Book-Save a Stray bazaar will return to Yfantourgeio in aid of P.A.W.S. (Protecting Animals Without Shelter) where new and used books will be on sale on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm. On Sunday, Palaia Pineza will host the 8th Anakoutrefko Thrift Market with second-hand items looking for their new home. Pre-used clothes, shoes, books, games and more will be sold in an effort to promote a circular economy.

Also happening this Saturday is the final of the Eurovision Song Contest and Nicosia will host an outdoor, free Eurovision screening party. Organised by the Embassy of Switzerland and ACCEPT LGBTI Cyprus, the event on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, will be an opportunity to watch the final in a group and enjoy it in a party setting.

Paphos district

A Eurovision party will also happen in Paphos at Eléa Golf Club. The event will kick off at 8pm with a DJ spinning iconic Eurovision hits through the ages as a Eurovision-inspired dinner takes place. The screening of the grand final will begin at 10pm and continue until late.

Lastly, for a dose of local art, head to the Kamares Craft Fair near Tala on Saturday for a line-up of events. From 10am to 3pm there will be a series of performances including a Bulgarian Dance Troupe, a Salsa dancer and DJs. A fashion show by The Clothing Lounge will also take place alongside an arts & crafts market. Of course, it would not be a complete event without festival food and drink throughout the day.
